Chinese Medicine Techniques

At Essence of Juji, I incorporate a variety of traditional Chinese medicine techniques to support your healing journey. Among these are acupuncture, moxibustion, guā shā, and cupping — each offering unique benefits and enhancing the effectiveness of your treatment. Diagnostic methods like pulse and tongue diagnosis and (meridian) palpation are tools used to be able to understand the state of your body’s internal balance and overall health, and thus provide deep insights that guide the selection of the most appropriate and effective treatment strategies. Read about the different techniques and methods below.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body, known as acupuncture points. These points are located along pathways called meridians, through which qì flows. According to Chinese medicine, when the flow of is disrupted (whether by stress, injury, or illness), it can lead to physical or emotional imbalances.

By stimulating acupuncture points, the flow of is regulated, helping to restore balance and harmony within the body. This process promotes the body’s natural healing abilities, reduces inflammation, improves circulation, and encourages the release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkillers.

Moxibustion
Moxibustion is a therapeutic technique that involves burning dried mugwort (known as "moxa") near specific acupuncture points or areas of the body. The heat generated by moxa stimulates the flow of and xuè (Blood), promoting circulation and warming the body's meridians. This process helps to dispel Cold and Dampness, relieve pain, and support overall health.

Moxibustion is particularly beneficial for conditions such as chronic pain, digestive issues, and menstrual irregularities. It can also strengthen the immune system and improve energy levels. Depending on your needs, moxa may be applied directly on the skin, placed on an acupuncture needle, or hovered just above the surface.

Guā shā
Guā shā is a technique that involves gently scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool, often made of jade or other natural materials. This scraping action helps to release tension, stimulate circulation, and promote the movement of and xuè (Blood). The process can leave temporary red or purple marks on the skin, which are considered a sign of stagnant blood and toxins being released from the body.

Guā shā is commonly used to alleviate muscle pain, stiffness, and inflammation. It is also effective in treating respiratory issues like colds or bronchitis, as well as reducing stress and promoting relaxation. By enhancing circulation and breaking up stagnation, gua sha supports the body’s natural healing processes.

Cupping
Cupping therapy involves placing glass, silicone, or bamboo cups on the skin to create a vacuum seal. This suction effect draws the skin and superficial muscle layer into the cup, which promotes blood flow, releases muscle tension, and encourages the movement of . Cupping can help to detoxify the body, reduce pain, and improve overall circulation.

Cupping is particularly useful for relieving back and neck pain, tight muscles, and respiratory issues like asthma or bronchitis. It is also effective for treating anxiety, fatigue, and certain digestive problems. The marks left by cupping, which may appear as circular bruises, are a normal response and typically fade within a few days.

Pulse Diagnosis
Pulse diagnosis involves the careful assessment of the pulse at three positions on each wrist. Each position corresponds to different organ systems within the body. By feeling the pulse at various depths, I can assess the quality, rhythm, strength, and rate of your pulse. This information reveals patterns of imbalance or disharmony in the body, such as issues related to (energy), xuè (Blood), or specific organ systems.

The pulse provides a dynamic picture of your health, reflecting not only physical conditions but also emotional and energetic states. Through this detailed examination, I can identify the root causes of symptoms and tailor treatments to address the underlying imbalances.

Tongue Diagnosis
Tongue diagnosis is another vital aspect of Chinese medicine. The tongue is viewed as a mirror of the body’s internal state, providing visual clues about your health. During a tongue diagnosis, I will observe the color, shape, coating, and texture of your tongue. Each of these characteristics offers valuable information about your body’s condition.

For instance, the color of the tongue can indicate the presence of Heat or Cold in the body, while the coating may reveal the state of your digestion and fluids. The shape and texture can reflect the strength of your qì and the balance of your internal organs. Together, these observations help to create a comprehensive understanding of your health and guide the course of your treatment.
